The launch of the 20th edition of the Montreal Architectural Heritage Campaign (MAHC) was recently held at City Hall on September 24th. On this occasion, the Mayor, Mr. Gérald Tremblay, Helen Fotopulos, Executive Committee Member responsible for Culture, Heritage, Design and the Status of Women together with the Chair of Heritage Montreal’s Board of Directors, Mr. Robert Turgeon, presented thirty Emeritus Awards to property owners concerned with the maintenance, valorisation and preservation of their residences or businesses.
Among the five prestigious special awards, we would like to highlight the SITQ Award of Excellence, created to honour an organization or an individual who has contributed in a significant way to the preservation of our city’s heritage, which was awarded to Me Maurice Forget. Past Chair of the Board of Directors of Heritage Montreal, Me Forget was honoured for his involvement in initiating the protection and promotion of the built heritage in a number of Montreal neighbourhoods during the 1990s.
The Montreal Architectural Heritage Campaign was initiated by Joshua Wolfe (then Executive Director of Heritage Montreal) and by architect Gabriel Deschambault of the City of Montreal who together launched the first edition in 1991. Since then, the MAHC has become a major event whose goal is to raise awareness of the wealth of built heritage throughout Montreal’s neighbourhoods and to draw attention to the importance of its preservation.
From September 24th to October 10th, a multitude of free activities have been organised in connection with the MAHC, including photography exhibitions, film presentations, guided visits, conferences, and more. For the complete list of activities please consult operationpatrimoine.com.
DID YOU KNOW ? 475th ANNIVERSARY OF MONTREAL ON OCTOBER 2, 2010

The 475th anniversary of the naming of Montreal is upon us ! In fact, the naming of our fair city is an established historical fact. In 1535, as on October 2, Jacques Cartier and his fellow explorers were visiting the first nations of Hochelaga and gave the name ‘Mont Royal’ to our iconic and well-loved mountain.
It is from this day that the name Montreal came into being. Not many cities can pinpoint the exact day of the origins of their name and, as such, this rare historical birthday is certainly worthy of note. Accordingly, Heritage Montreal has brought together its partners including the City of Montreal and Les Amis de la Montagne to offer activities that highlight this little known but important date in Montreal’s history.
On October 2 2010 Heritage Montreal will be hosting a Public Round Table with noted historians and archeologists to discuss and share knowledge of Hochelage and its inhabitants in the era of Jacques Cartier. Open to the public, this event will take place at the McCord Museum (690 Sherbrooke Street West, McGill Metro) from 2pm to 4pm. Offered free of charge, limited spaces are available. Registration can be done in advance at Heritage Montreal (514-286-2662, ext. 26) or on site at the McCord Museum as of 1:30pm on October 2. For further details, www.heritagemontreal.org
On October 3 2010 the date on which Jacques Cartier ascended the mountain, guided by the inhabitants of Hochelaga, Les Amis de la Montagne will be offerring a Randonnée des 3 sommets. The event will run all day from 9 am to 4pm. Further details can be obtained from www.lemontroyal.qc.ca
