Heritage and Planning Resolutions

Resolution #1 on the modernisation of the legislation relative to cultural heritage in Quebec

•    Urgently proceed with the revision of the Cultural Property Act and its implementation in 2009, and

•    Create follow up mechanisms to ensure the efficiency of protection statuses and specific measures for heritage landscapes,           obligations of public authorities, and heritage-friendly taxation.

Resolution #2 on urban planning in Montreal

•    Restore a genuine Urban Planning Department in 2009 with adequate expertise and autonomy;

•    Entrust this Department with the compulsory updating of the Urban Master Plan in 2009

•    Create a public mechanism to verify the admissibility of any public or private project,

Resolution #3 on the protection and valorisation of Mount Royal

•    Adopt and apply true definitions and goals for the protection and enhancement of Mount Royal, including firm limits to the transformation of use of buildings and sites on the mountain according to their heritage values,

•    Demand from any public, institutional or private project that its demonstrates in advance its admissibility and its true contribution to the protection and enhancement of the historical, architectural, landscape, aesthetic and natural heritage of the mountain

Resolution #4 on the religious and institutional heritage of Montreal

•    Define a protection and enhancement strategy for the religious and institutional heritage sites and buildings, and
•    Incorporate this work in the updating of the Urban Master Plan.

Resolution #5 on the Montreal Architectural Heritage Campaign

•    Salutes the successful OPAM campaign and the sustained support from the City of Montreal and the other partners of the campaign, and
•    Asks that the coming 20th edition of the campaign in 2010 benefit from a special programme considering that the OPAM has become one of the largest programmes of heritage promotion world-wide,

Resolution #6 on the role of the Federal Government in the protection and valorisation of heritage in Montreal

•    Implement the Historic Places Initiative as of 2009;

•    Urgently intervene to safeguard and conserve the home of Sir Louis-H. La Fontaine, the first Prime Minister of Canada (then United Canada);

•    Actively partake in the protection and enhancement of Silo 5, the Lachine Canal and its industrial heritage, Square Dorchester / Place du Canada and Mount Royal;

•    Efficiently contribute to the protection, enhancement and national and international recognition of the heritage ensemble of Montreal.
