(PDF file)

For immediate release

Montreal, October 18, 2007 – Héritage Montréal is proud to associate itself with Tourisme Montréal, the World Center of Excellence on Tourist Destinations (CED) and John Frances, Vice-President of the National Geographic Society, in signing the Geotourism Charter for Montreal, at a ceremony attended today by the Mayor of Montreal.

“We are delighted by the support that this joint initiative by Héritage Montréal and Tourisme Montréal has received, not only from those involved in heritage protection and tourism in Montreal but especially from the world-renowned National Geographic Society. Montreal has now been recognized as the first urban destination in the Society’s world geotourism and sustainable tourism program”, said Héritage Montréal President Robert Turgeon. “This constitutes a major act of recognition of Montreal and its builders, as well as an acknowledgement of the vital role played by organizations, such as Heritage Montreal, that work to promote and protect the City’s unique heritage.”

Héritage Montréal will contribute to this partnership its expertise in the field of Montreal’s built heritage and its collective history in its implementation of the Charter principles. This will comprise documenting and promoting heritage attractions and walking tours in areas including the Downtown and Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhoods as well as around the Lachine Canal. In addition, Héritage Montréal will be launching Phase 2 of its innovative project “Montreal InSites” online in the Spring of 2008. This new multimedia platform will allow visitors to explore a number of key heritage sites in Montreal’s various neighbourhoods.

Héritage Montréal is an independent, charitable, private organization that has been working since 1975 to promote and protect the architectural, historic and landscape heritage of Montreal, its neighbourhoods and communities. Through its independent expertise drawn from its local, national and international networks, its educational programs, advocacy activities and strategic partnerships, Heritage Montréal contributes to improving the quality of the city by promoting a greater appreciation of its built heritage- thereby preserving Montreal’s identity and unique charm.
