Montréal, May 23, 2008 – And they’re off! With the help of Héritage Montréal and its Web site memorablemontreal.com, discover the astonishing architecture of a building, the fabulous history of a park or square, or the diversity of the public art of our constantly changing city – all at your own pace.
Take a virtual step outside! Design your own route. Urban pleasures await you through the exploration of ten new neighbourhoods - Downtown, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Old Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Pointe-Saint-Charles, Sault-au-Récollet, Côte-des-Neiges, the Latin Quarter, Old Lachine, Petite-Patrie, and Saint-Henri - along with three existing ones - Little Italy, Square Mile and La Fontaine.
“The Government of Canada is proud to participate in projects such as Montréal InSites, which help share our creativity, our culture, and our history with the world,” said the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages. “This partnership with the Heritage Montréal Foundation helps showcase the richness of Montréal’s culture and heritage, and contributes to the realization of the Montréal Cultural Metropolis action plan.”
Robert Turgeon, President of the Board of Directors of Héritage Montréal, added that, “Built heritage and public places are at the heart of what we call Montréal’s DNA. With its knowledge of built heritage and memory of Montréal neighbourhoods, Héritage Montréal is an integral component of the city’s DNA. Through our Internet site, we hope to imbue Montrealers with a sense of pride in and belonging to their environment so they will become important players in protecting and promoting their neighbourhoods.
“Following the announcement earlier this week of a brand new grant program for the renovation of heritage buildings, Héritage Montréal is now unveiling yet another way to enhance our city’s heritage. The ten new virtual neighbourhoods added to the organization’s Web site complete this invaluable tool for raising awareness of Montréal’s architectural heritage,” concluded Catherine Sévigny, City Councillor responsible for Culture and the Downtown area.
Since October 2007, Héritage Montréal has been pleased to help make Montréal the first urban centre in the National Geographic Society’s global program promoting geotourism and sustainable destinations.
