Silo No 5
Windmill Point
Architectural Value
By virtue of its size, siting and volume, Silo No 5 creates a monumental alignment along the entire length of the Pointe-du-Moulin. It consists of three distinct parts linked together by aerial galleries. With its floating elevators which allowed the offloading of grain from the holds of lakers and the simultaneous loading of transatlantic vessels without ever coming into contact with the quays, the silo demonstrates the technological prowess of the era, while offering the possibility of an observatory overlooking the city and the river. Its heritage value has been recognized by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office.
Historic Value
Built in four stages (1906, 1913, 1924 and 1958), Silo No 5 is the only example of the evolution of grain elevators in the 20th century. With the demolition of Silo No. 1 and Silo No. 2, it is now the last vestige of the harbour panorama of Old Montreal in the 20th century.
The Threat
Owned by the Montreal Port Authority, the silo has not been used since 1996, and is suffering from a lack of maintenance. Furthermore, it is being considered for demolition or for various projects that lack respect for its heritage value.
Actions by Héritage Montréal
Héritage Montréal participated in the organisation of a symposium and of various activities aimed at saving this industrial building. The organisation advocates the identification of new preservation solutions, such as giving access to the upper part of the silo and its magnificent views of Montreal and the St. Lawrence valley.
