Pointe Claire Village, with its artisan houses, its institutional core around St. Joachim Church and the remarkable view of Lac St. Louis, forms a truly extraordinary ensemble. The historic centre of the municipality is characterised by very well-maintained structures, examples of the rural and village architecture of the era. The shores of Lac St. Louis form an exceptional physical and natural setting which has influenced the town’s development.
Pointe Claire Village dates from the French régime, as evidenced by several archaeological sources such as the windmill or the buried vestiges of structures. The name of the municipality bears the mark of its lakeside location, and keeps its memory alive.
The ambitious project for construction of a church hall on the old cemetery and work on infrastructure projects carried out without any regard for the fate of archaeological remains are indeed problematic. Furthermore, the densification of construction along Lac St. Louis in Pointe Claire as well as Dorval and Westward is leading to the disappearance of an exceptional landscape, being replaced by gigantic homes . This lack of control over the subdivision of the lots on the lakeshore reduces public visual access to the lake.
Héritage Montréal acted by supporting local organisations in their preparatory work on urban planning consultations. The organisation advocates the adoption of clear municipal regulations which take all the values of the site into consideration.
