VOTE FOR HABITAT 67 IN LEGO CONTEST

© Antoine Rouleau

Habitat 67 is well ahead in the race to become the next model in the LEGO architecture series, with 184 517 votes (at press time)! This year, Habitat 67 is up against the likes of the roman Coliseum, the United States Capitol and the Eiffel Tower, among others, and voters are choosing amongst them to decide who will be the next miniaturized LEGO model.

For Heritage Montreal, Habitat 67 is an extraordinary example of Montreal’s built heritage. It is one of the few buildings in Canada that enjoys a remarkable international reputation. This international presence is making itself known once again, in the context of LEGO’s architecture contest.

Why is Habitat 67 so remarkable? Built for the 1967 Expo in Montreal by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the building represents a new style of high-density urban architecture, and inscribes itself in the ideals of the city’s modernist movement. Habitat 67 is certainly one of the Expo’s signature elements, one that deserves to be recognized both at home and at large.

Furthermore, Habitat 67 is an excellent example of the modernisation movement of the 20th century, in which new ways to house people were being explored. This social movement, which can be characterized by a concern for good living, good dwelling, looked to better the living conditions of people in urban environments.

We are particularly proud of Habitat 67’s designation as a historic monument, since it was Heritage Montreal who first brought the issue to attention in 2002. Habitat 67’s monumental status was confirmed in 2009 by the minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, Christine St-Pierre, after seven seven years of tireless work. This classification allows the building to benefit from the maximal protection policies that are afforded such monuments, which will help the owners of the property in their efforts to conserve Habitat 67 for all to enjoy. We are nearing the 10th anniversary of Heritage Montreal’s intervention in the protection of Habitat 67, and today’s renewed focus and recognition further proves its value both here and abroad.

© Antoine Rouleau

It is therefore not just a question of pride for Heritage Montreal, but pride for the city, the province and the country. We invite Montrealers, Québécois and Canadians alike to share this pride with us, and to vote for Habitat 67 in the Lego architecture contest. Show your love for Montreal, you can vote three times by following this link: http://architecture.lego.com/en-US/inspire-us/

A MAJOR STEP FORWARD: NEW LAW ON CULTURAL HERITAGE ADOPTED

The formal vote for the adoption of the new provincial Law on Cultural Heritage was held on Wednesday October 19th! This passage into law of Bill 82 is a landmark step towards the modernization of the legislative framework which governs the heritage protection and valorization. The new Law is founded on the recognition of the protection of cultural heritage, comprised of sites, landscapes, ojects and knowledge, as one of the principles of sustainable development as defined by the laws of Quebec.

The bill having now been passed into law, we must fully understand its breadth and scope. Heritage Montreal has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Culture in order to set this in motion. This marks the start of a new legislative chapter for heritage in Quebec, one in which Heritage Montreal is and will remain closely involved with.

A SUMMER MARATHON 500 KM LONG!

Following the success of our fall 2010 guided tours of Silo No. 5 and the Pointe du Moulin, a new edition was launched in the spring and summer of 2011. In all more than 2,000 participants, spread over 80 groups had the opportunity to visit this unusual and legendary site. This project was made possible through a special partnership with the Canada Lands Company and the collaboration of sixty volunteers who dedicated a combined 720 hours of their time.

Our 2011 edition of our popular ArchitecTours was launched in August under the theme of “Montreal in Metamorphosis mode”. Despite at times uninviting weather, throughout the season nearly 900 participants were given the opportunity to discover major projects that will significantly shape our city’s landscape in the near future. Amidst construction cones and cranes, we visited eight Montreal neighbourhoods undergoing important transformations. Once again, our volunteers’ precious help ensured a successful seasons.

A very big thank you to all the participants and volunteers!

Our ArchitecTours and walking tour programme closed off an exceptional summer season with over 3,000 participants walking over 500 kilometres to discover a city in full metamorphosis!

On October 18, a draw was held to award prizes for a few lucky ArchitecTours participants who completed our survey. Congratulations to the winners!

1st prize: One night for two, including breakfast courtesy of the charming Auberge Bonaparte went to Nicole Leroux.

2nd prize : One gourmet meal for two courtesy of the Auberge Bonaparte Restaurant went to Renée Kinik.

3rd prize : A pair of tickets valid for admission to one of a choice of Montreal’s museums, courtesy of Board of Montreal Museum Directors went to Kaoshen Chung, Céline Cloutier and Walter Hrycyna.

A warm and sincere thank you to all our partners for their contribution to our successful 2011 season!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE ERMITAGE AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 100th ANNIVERSARY

The Ermitage, 3150, Côte-des-Neiges, in 1912© Collège de Montréal

The Ermitage, designed by architect Joseph Alfred-Hector Lapierre and built between 1911 and 1913, is now being restored to its glory days when it played a key role serving both the public and the performing arts community.

Originally known as the Pavillon des loisirs, its primary function was recreational. Owned by the Collège de Montréal, it was built to provide additional space for the students’ extracurricular activities. It housed two halls: one for sporting activities and the other, the academic hall, for the holding of theatrical, musical, and formal events.

For almost 25 years, between 1942 and 1967, the academic hall, renamed the Ermitage, was transformed into a public 600-seat theatre. In 1967, declining interest in the theatre lead to its closing to the public and its exclusive use by the students of the Collège de Montréal.

Since the 1990s, various restoration projects have been considered, but it was not until the early 2000’s that the Prêtres de Saint-Sulpice, owners of the building, agreed that the Collège de Montréal could restore the Ermitage and use it long term. Phase 1 of the work, entirely funded by the Collège de Montréal and its foundation, began in 2005 with repairs to the interior structures and surfaces, giving the Ermitage two rehearsal and concert halls, six soundproof music practice rooms, a 318-seat concert hall, and a gymnasium.

As part of the building’s centennial celebrations, a benefit event will be held on November 4 on behalf of the Ermitage restoration fund. The money raised will be used to repair the building’s exterior structures and surfaces, at an estimated cost of $2 million. Click here to learn more about this benefit event.
