From Faubourg Québec to the surroundings of the Viger station–hotel, via the iconic De La Gauchetière Street, Héritage Montréal presents three tours to help you discover the richness of Montreal’s architecture, as well as major modern transformations and efforts to preserve its heritage.
As At the Heart of the City is a two-year series, the 2026 tours are the same as those presented in 2025.
The eastern part of Old Montreal and Faubourg Québec have undergone major transformations since the 18th century. Commerce, housing, tourism, port and rail activities have all left their mark on the district. This tour takes a particular interest in how the markers of the past have been integrated into today's buildings.
From the demolition of the fortifications to the construction of the Ville-Marie expressway, the area around Viger Square and its station-hotel has undergone profound transformation. This tour looks at the urban metamorphoses that have reshaped this once pastoral and bourgeois landscape, as well as the projects that have redeveloped and revitalized it.
Laid out in the 18th century, rue De La Gauchetière was one of the city's first east-west roads linking the faubourgs. Now running parallel to the autoroute, this street bears witness to the densification of Montreal. From the CHUM, through Chinatown, to Beaver Hall Hill, this visit looks at how this emblematic thoroughfare reflects the challenges of contemporary integration into the city’s historic fabric.
Héritage Montréal is pleased to present At the Heart of the Metropolis, a series of tours exploring downtown Montreal, in partnership with La Caisse.
Rediscover the eastern part of Old Montreal and its surrounding faubourgs, along with their evolution.
