School Program: “My Neighborhood Heritage: A Story to Explore”

Since 2024, Héritage Montréal has been offering a series of activities designed to raise awareness and spark an interest in heritage and history among elementary school students as part of the pilot project “My Neighborhood’s Heritage: A Story to Explore.”

Héritage Montréal offers classroom activities and field trips in the vicinity of participating schools. Starting in 2022, the team developed educational materials tailored to the neighborhood’s geography and history. To date, the program has been implemented in ten elementary schools across the city in Ahuntsic, Hochelaga, Verdun, Saint-Henri, Cartierville, Villeray, as well as on the Plateau-Mont-Royal and in Rosemont.

For 50 years, education—and more specifically, raising young people’s awareness of the various facets of Montreal’s heritage, has been part of Heritage Montreal’s core mission. As early as 1979, the organization partnered with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to develop activities for young people and schools. Over the years and through various partnerships, projects such as Archibus and Quartiers de la diversité have been launched, along with family workshops in Little Burgundy and, more recently, educational activities for elementary school students, all of which inspire young people to discover the architectural heritage around them.

This program is offered to 5th and 6th grade elementary school classes by request only, subject to the team’s availability during the school year.
