Héritage Montréal welcomes the redevelopment project for the former Molson brewery site, whose origins date back to 1786. Long under discussion, this project represents a unique opportunity to bring heritage conservation and urban development together, striking a balance between preserving historic features, creating public spaces and opening up views of the remarkable St. Lawrence River landscape, while introducing contemporary uses into historic buildings and new structures.

This industrial complex holds exceptional heritage value, reflecting the history of Montreal, particularly its industrial and commercial development, as well as the city’s urban landscape. Although the former brewery, one of the most significant examples of industrial heritage in Quebec and Canada, has no formal heritage protection designation, this redevelopment vision, in keeping with the area’s urban planning framework, offers a promising way to ensure the site’s long-term preservation.

We also welcome the dialogue that the developers and their architects have initiated with organizations such as ours. This project will open up a site that was previously enclosed and inaccessible to the public, while showcasing its heritage value through its history, landscape and architectural features, including the administration building and its famous giant clock.
